COntinuing Scenario Based Anaesthetic Resuscitation Training

COSBART

Ethos

COSBART was developed at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust by members of the Anaesthetic department in response to the need for a low cost form of life support training relevant to anaesthesia rather than general medicine. The course borrows freely from the work of the ALS group and the resuscitation council, and it aims to permit members of a department to refresh their skills and memories on an (at least) annual basis. The hope is that the regular and frequent practice of scenarios specifically drawn from anaesthesia with one’s colleagues is more useful than a triennial three day course aimed at crises likely to occur on a medical ward. The basic tenet of the course is that once a scenario has been successfully completed candidates can then facilitate that scenario; thus, all staff can undertake and subsequently run both individual scenarios and complete courses. Courses take 1PA of clinical time and cost about £35 per head. Equipment needs are very modest.
